Tata Power has invested ₹4,300 crore in this state-of-the-art facility, which will contribute to the company’s goal of expanding its renewable energy portfolio, particularly in solar rooftop and utility-scale segments.Chennai: TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), announced the commencement of commercial production from its 2 GW solar cell line at the Tirunelveli facility in Tamil Nadu. This facility, the largest single-location solar cell and module plant in the country, is part of Tata Power’s strategy to support India’s clean energy goals and reduce dependence on solar imports.The Tirunelveli plant has a total cell and module manufacturing capacity of 4.3 GW. Earlier this year, the company had successfully initiated solar module production and has produced 1,250 MW of solar modules to date. The plant is expected to ramp up its production with an additional 2 GW capacity for cells in the coming 4-6 weeks, reaching peak production within a few months.Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD, Tata Power, said, “The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency. The plant’s modules are already part of the Government's Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), and the company expects its solar cells to join the list soon.In addition to this facility, Tata Power operates another plant in Bengaluru, with a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells. To date, it has supplied 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells. Tata Power aims to increase its renewable energy portfolio from 41% to 70% by 2030.
