Solar energy key to energy transition, says Union minister at CoP29

Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kriti Vardhan Singh highlighted the significance of solar energy in addressing global energy challenges at the high-level ministerial session on ‘Energy Transitions for the Global South’ on the sidelines of UNFCCC-CoP29 in Baku.

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kriti Vardhan Singh highlighted the significance of solar energy in addressing global energy challenges at the high-level ministerial session on ‘Energy Transitions for the Global South’ on the sidelines of UNFCCC-CoP29 in Baku.


Singh emphasized that solar energy, as one of the most affordable and accessible sources of power, offers clean energy solutions to communities across income levels. He pointed out its versatility, ranging from rooftop installations to large-scale solar parks, and its potential to address environmental, economic, and social challenges.

The minister called for collective efforts to scale up solar energy adoption, particularly in the Global South, to meet increasing energy demands while achieving sustainable development goals. He also highlighted India’s National Solar Mission as a cornerstone of its solar energy transition.


Singh reiterated the importance of a just and inclusive global energy transition, emphasizing the need to focus on vulnerable populations. He urged global stakeholders to advance innovation, set ambitious climate goals, and foster international cooperation for a sustainable energy future.


The session also saw the release of the International Solar Alliance’s (ISA) report titled ‘Unleashing the Role of Solar,’ which highlights the role of solar energy in driving global energy transitions.
