New Delhi: NHPC and SJVNL, two leading hydro power Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), have been conferred with the prestigious Navratna status by the Government of India, according to an order issued by the Department of Public Enterprises on 30th August 2024. This status provides both companies with enhanced operational and financial autonomy.

Union minister for power and housing & urban affairs Manohar Lal, felicitated the CMDs of NHPC and SJVNL, describing the Navratna recognition as a significant milestone. He highlighted the critical role of hydro CPSUs in harnessing the country’s hydro power potential, contributing to energy generation while limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

With the Navratna status, NHPC and SJVNL will have increased autonomy to make faster decisions, particularly in capital expenditure (CAPEX) and investment plans. The status also enables these companies to establish joint ventures overseas, access new markets, and form technological alliances, thereby strengthening their market positions and fostering long-term growth.

NHPC currently has an installed capacity of 7,144 MW, while SJVNL has 2,467 MW. Both companies are engaged in the construction of projects totaling 10,443 MW by NHPC and 4,836 MW by SJVNL.
